Beach & Lifestyle
Ibiza
Beyond the nightlife, Ibiza has quiet coves, forested hills, and a relaxed pace that surprises most first-time visitors. The island works equally well as a beach retreat or a party destination.

Barcelona
Architecture, food markets, beaches, and a walkable city centre — Barcelona works for long weekends and extended stays. One of Europe's most visited cities for good reason.
Barcelona guide →Planning a Spain trip
Spain covers an enormous range of travel experiences across a single country. The three destinations on this site represent two distinct types of trip: the Balearic Islands (Ibiza and Mallorca) are warm-weather island destinations accessed by short flights from most European cities, while Barcelona is a major European city with year-round appeal and excellent international transport links. Planning for each requires a different approach, and combining them in a single trip is straightforward if you factor in the domestic flight between the islands and the mainland.
Ibiza and Mallorca are both reached by direct flights from across Europe and share the same sea crossing if you want to travel between them by ferry. The Ibiza–Mallorca ferry crossing takes approximately two and a half hours and runs regularly during the summer season, making a combined island trip viable for stays of a week or more. Both islands have their own distinct character: Ibiza is smaller, more international, and more associated with nightlife and design hotels; Mallorca is larger, more varied, with a wider range of accommodation types from rural farmhouses to large beach resorts.
Barcelona is a city-break specialist that works for any length of stay from two days to two weeks. The compact historic center (Gothic Quarter, El Born, Eixample) is walkable, the metro is efficient, and the beaches are within reach of the city center on foot or by short taxi. The Sagrada Família and Park Güell require advance ticket bookings, often weeks ahead during peak season. Barcelona also serves as a practical base for day trips — the Costa Brava to the north and the Penedès wine region to the south are both accessible by public transport.
The best time to visit depends on the destination. The Balearic Islands are a summer destination — the beach season runs from approximately May to October, with July and August the busiest and most expensive months. May, June, and September offer the best combination of reliable weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds. Barcelona is genuinely year-round: spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for city exploration, but the city is lively in winter and the lack of peak-summer heat can make long sightseeing days more enjoyable between October and April.
A common planning mistake with Spain is trying to combine a Balearic island with Barcelona on a short trip without accounting for the transit time. A direct flight from Ibiza to Barcelona takes under an hour, but when you factor in airport transfers, check-in, and baggage reclaim, a half-day is typically lost. For trips of a week or less, choose either the islands or the city. For two weeks, a combination works well: start with Barcelona and fly on to one or both Balearic islands before returning home.
Airports
Barcelona El Prat (BCN) for mainland Spain. Ibiza Airport (IBZ) serves Ibiza. Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) serves Mallorca. All three have direct international connections from major European cities.
Getting around
Ibiza and Mallorca require a flight or ferry between them and from the mainland. Barcelona is compact and walkable; the metro covers the rest. Car rental makes sense on Mallorca for exploring beyond the resort areas.
Best season
Balearic Islands: May to June and September for best value and pleasant beaches. July to August is peak season with highest prices. Barcelona: spring and autumn for comfortable city walking; winter is quiet and affordable.
